Vowels & Onsets - Feb 16

Sometimes, dialect and regionalisms that are unique to where we were born and raised, can be directly causing us challenges in our tuning, ease and effectiveness with our overall singing, especially in a cappella and barbershop. In Bel Canto, we understand that our formation of vowels, as well as optimal and effective vowel and consonant onsets, can be understood, felt, adjusted and unified with others, through the lens of stabilized structure and precise activation. In this workshop with Debra Lynn, we will visually, kinesthetically and auditorily learn to diagnose what is causing our issues in this area of vocal production, and practice the accompanying solutions associated with these principles.

Troubleshooting - March 10

The list of challenges that we can be facing in our journey towards effortless, accurate singing, can often be long and rather tedious. Trying to solve these problems can be equally frustrating. In Bel Canto we are practicing the art of becoming an optimal, acoustic, resonating instrument that is designed to activate and amplify sound with no force. As we become stabilized in these mechanics, almost all of our challenges quite literally disappear. Adding to this effect, the aging voice and the associated sensation of loss of control is reversed, allowing full rejuvenation to occur. In this workshop with Debra Lynn, we will come together to discuss the challenges we are facing in an interactive safe space. Then, we will tackle these issues one-by-one in a kinesthetically experiential way, as well as addressing the visual and auditory learners.

Seasonal Changes - Apr 13

As we move between seasons, as singers, we often experience allergy-related symptoms that can sometimes shift into sinus and upper respiratory infections. Post sinus drip that occurs overnight, while we sleep, can have us wake with more phlegm to deal with and even occasionally, irritated vocal folds. Bel Canto offers us a way to think about these symptoms differently, when it comes to warming up and moving the phlegm sensations out of the way, so that we can continue to sing with ease. In this workshop with Debra Lynn, we will discuss the various aspects of impact in terms of allergies, infections and accompanying fold swelling. Then, we will learn techniques for eliminating the effects of mucus on and around our vocal folds, as well as the resonating surfaces.

Love Your Voice - May 25

Oftentimes, when we are asked if we like our singing voice, we will hesitate to say, β€œYes.” This internal dialogue about the evaluation of our vocal quality, in terms of tone, accuracy, beauty, can hinder our ability to release the voice and enjoy that process. In this workshop with Debra Lynn, we will have an honest conversation about these internal dialogues and discuss how they affect our singing. As we interact together, we will begin to see that we are not alone in our self-judgments and then, through a series of experiential exercises, we will discover ways to reframe our thoughts and feelings, so that we can more fully enjoy the act of singing and releasing our voice. Throughout the session, we will learn simple ways that focusing on Bel Canto structural principles can also bring more beauty to all aspects of our vocal production.
